Brand Heritage — Dodge Brothers

1901    John (1864-1920) and Horace (1868-1920) found a machine shop after selling out of Evans and Dodge Bicycle business. They soon supplied engines to Olds, in 1903 become 10% owners of new Ford Motor company in return for supplying engines and transmissions. In 1913, afraid that Ford will become self sufficient, they give Ford a year’s notice of withdrawal from their contract, and announce a car of their own. In 1919 Ford buys their original worth of stock for 5M.

Chapter One — Walter P. Chrysler (pdf) 

1914  First Dodge car Model 30-35, four cylinder.

1915  Dodge cars are used in combat—the Army’s first gasoline powered combat vehicles—against Pancho Villa in Mexico.

1916  Graham Brothers start putting truck bodies on Dodge car chassis.

1916 

Chapter Two — Corporate Origins (pdf)

1917  Dodge commercial vehicles appear as 1918 models.

1920  Both Dodge Brothers die; Frederick Haynes becomes President in 1921.

1921  Dodge allows the Graham Brothers (Ray 1887-1932, Robert 1885-1967, Joseph 1883-1971), truck body builders, to build trucks under the Graham name with Dodge running gear and engines exclusively; 6 months later Dodge buys controlling interest in Graham; the Brothers leave in 1927 to turn Paige into Graham-Paige and build cars.

1923 

Dodge introduces first all-steel 4 door sedans.

1924  Heirs sell Dodge to Dillon, Read and Co. for 46M. Dodge assumes control of Graham.

1924 

Chapter Three — Walter’s Cars, Walter’s Company (pdf)

1927  Dodge’s first 6.

1928  Dodge bought by Chrysler. Chrysler introduces a new truck under the Fargo name; Internal expanding hydraulic brakes; Integral floorpan bodies—forerunner of unitized bodies.

1929  Chapter Five — Surviving the Great Depression (pdf)

1930 

Dodge introduces straight 8. No more Graham Brothers trucks.

1933 

First Chrysler-engineered Dodge Trucks; Dodge Ram symbol appears.

1934  Chapter Six — Trouble and Triumph in the Thirties (pdf)

1935  Dodge custom builds Airflow styled tank trucks (until 1940).
 
1936 

Dodge revives the convertible sedan.

1938 

Last year for Dodge Brothers insignia.

1939  

“Job-rated” redesigned Dodge Trucks appear; Special Hayes bodied coupes appear.

1941 

Chapter Seven — Chrysler Goes to War (pdf)

1945 

Dodge introduces the “Power Wagon” truck—the civilian version of a military truck.

“Pilot House” Dodge pick-ups appear.

Dodge “Sweptside” truck; Dodge Daytona 500 Hemi model introduced.
